I was one of the thousands of students that were approached by Discover card on my first day of college. There was a lovely booth put together by Discover and their target was me. No job, school loans borrowed and just barely 18 years old and I was being offered my first personal credit card. And so the story went, I maxed out a credit card before I completed my first economics class in school that year. And as soon as I maxed that one out, they'd reward me with another, and another. What exactly did I do to deserve this amount of credit remains, to this day, a mystery to me?
Fast forward 10 years later and I have managed to accumulate just over $10,000 in debt that no matter what I did, would not recede. There was no low tide in my world, the fees and interest just kept building and building. I went online and researched my options - bankruptcy, credit counseling, debt settlement or doing what I've been doing - paying the minimum each month and getting nowhere fast. The word bankruptcy gave me chills, credit counseling was a program a few of my friends went through, one of them dropped out and the other took her 8 years to complete! I called Debtmerica, collected the information I needed to make an educated decision on the fate of my credit card debt. I chose to enroll and it was the best decision I have made so far. I was out of debt within 2 and a half years. It was a pain free experience. Anytime I had a question, I called customer service and they walked me through any concerns I had. My credit scores took a hit, but have since rebounded back up to the high 600's, low 700's.
